Welcome to the new section of my blog where I highlight some of the talented creatives that I’ve followed from around the world. These fortnightly posts will highlight a small amount of the talent that is already out there, and hopefully promote more collaboration, rather than competition between creatives.
This week we’re highlighting the work of Elize from The Netherlands. I’ve personalley been following her Instagram for only a short time now, but every picture I see I like straight away, thinking about how stunning they are!
You can find her on:
Is your social media your day job/side income or hobby? If a hobby, what do you for work?
My Elize in Wonderland accounts are not my job. I work as a freelance designer and photographer and I do have a seperate account for my photography that plays a part for my work as a photographer, @elizedekuijper
What is your favourite thing about yourself?
That I have an honest opinion about most things.
What is one goal you have for the next year?
Well, I just started working as a freelance designer and photographer. My goal for next year is to achieve goals in my company. I want to learn and become a great photographer that a lot of people want to shoot with. Another goal is to start doing other creative things again, like painting. And I want to keep travelling as much as possible.
What’s one way you’ve been challenged in the last year?
I was challenged by my graduation from University. I was so happy about what I achieved, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do in life. I didn’t know anything anymore. I started to find myself again step by step and then decided I should just go for it and do what I love most. That’s when I decided to start working as a freelance designer and photographer.
What is the main focus of your content?
My insta used to focus on travel, but it now focusses on my life as a plus-sized girl who also happens to travel. If I’m totally honest, I find it hard to find balance on Instagram. One day I think I want to share only travel photos, but the other I want to share pictures of my daily life at home as well. My YouTube channel focusses on travel only. I vlog when I travel and share the videos on my YouTube channel. My blog is mostly about travel, but also contains some posts about being a plus-sized girl. I must say I don’t blog that often, but I want to change that. Maybe that can be a goal for next year as well!
What influenced you to start your page?
I started out with a travel account, because i loved other people’s travel accounts. But this was years ago and that account I started with, doesn’t exist anymore. Nowadays I’m getting tired of seeing the same kind of photos all over social media, so I don’t look at what other people do and post what I want to post in that moment. I want my Instagram account to be real, because that’s what I miss on a lot of other Instagram accounts.
How have you improved the quality of your content since you began?
I think the quality of my content may have decreased actually. Since I started out wanting to create this perfect feed to go with my blog and eventually let that go and started posting whatever I wanted. It really depends on what your goal is on social media. I follow some huge Instagram accounts, because I like the way their pictures look. But I also follow a lot of smaller Instagram accounts that are more real to be able to connect with people.
Who are some of your favourite Instagram accounts?
For beautiful travel pictures I love @taramilktea and @sarahannabella. I love @lizzyperridon for fashion inspiration, @juliexjapan for sharing her life in Japan and @kawineko for creating the cutest pink feed!
Who are some of your favourite Bloggers?
My favourite blog is https://www.barefootblonde.com/. It’s not even a travel or plus-size blog, but I just can’t help loving it. I used to love http://www.theboldbrunette.com/ as well, but I haven’t really been reading any blogs lately (sorry, not sorry).
What’s one insecurity you have about yourself?
I’m a pretty insecure person, but one insecurity I struggle with when I travel is being plus-sized. Especially when you’re travelling to countries with smaller people, it can make me feel insecure and it also makes it hard to find clothes. There can be weight limits for certain tourist attractions and seats on public transport can be smaller. I’ve also dealt with the fear of the plane seatbelt being too short. I’ve never had this problem, but still fear it will happen once.
What would be the ultimate end goal with your social media? Is there something you want to work towards?
It’s not really something I’m working towards, but it would be great to do collabs with brands and get products or even trips sponsored. It’s something that’s happening a lot on Instagram and YouTube and I’m not going to lie: it sounds like a dream to be able to live off of your Instagram feed.
What’s your opinion on selling and buying lightroom presets?
I’m not sure what to think of it really. I think it can be great for people to be able to buy a preset if you don’t know how to edit your photos, but it also causes a lot of the same pictures. If everyone would just share their own work, instead of copying others (even if it’s only using someone’s preset) there would be more unique content. Oh btw: $50 for a preset?! That’s way overpriced in my opinion! But if people are willing to pay that much for a preset, I might think about selling mine too hahaha. I’d recommend you to watch some YouTube tutorials and do the editing yourself, it’s pretty easy to learn the basics!
What camera do you use?
My iPhone mostly, because I always have it with me. I’ve also used the Nikon D3300 for a long time, but I’ve upgraded my DSLR because I’m also working as a photographer.
What software do you use to edit your photos?
I edit my DSLR photos in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I edit my iPhone pictures on my iPhone with mobile apps. Here are some of the apps I use: Lightroom cc, VSCO, Super
Where is your next travel destination?
I’m going to South Korea and Japan later this year and I’m soooooo excited! This is going to be my first trip to South Korea and my second time in Japan!
What destination is still on the top of your bucket list?
So many! I think I want to do a roadtrip through the U.S.A. next, or visit Taiwan.
What is one piece of advice you have for someone who wants to travel but is overwhelmed by the process of planning and choosing the right trip?
The process of planning and choosing is hard and it takes a lot of time and effort. At least it does for me. But it’s worth everything when you’re actually standing there at your dream destination. Don’t forget that Google is your best friend. And so are travel bloggers / vloggers / Instagrammers 🙂
What is one thing you take with you on all of your travels?
I don’t really bring anything special with me, but I always pack one outfit in my carry-on baggage in case my suitcase gets lost.
What has been your favourite destination so far? Why?
Japan, because it’s so diverse. You have the overwhelming cities, the calm shrines and temples and the beautiful nature. Japan also has amazing food and I really love their culture and the people.
Travelling solo or with friends?
I travel with my husband!
Group tours or your own itinerary?
Definitely my own itinerary. Freedom is one of the most important things to me, so I want to do whatever I want to do, whenever I want to do it! I am a perfectionist and a control freak, and I actually like to do research on a country and find all the best places to visit (or at least all the places I really want to visit).
