Creative Collaborations is all about sharing with you all the inspiring and talented people I see kicking butt around the world through their chosen social media channels. Like the look or sound of these creatives? Give them a follow!
Let’s start with the basics, who are you? Where are you from?
I’m Cherene Saradar. I was raised in a small town near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but lived in Miami, Florida most of my adult life. Now I’m sort of nomadic.
What is your favourite thing about yourself?
My strength and resilience. I bounce back from whatever crap life sends me. Not that I’ve had it so bad in the grand scheme of things but I’ve had my share of bad luck in life and no doubt it has made me stronger. Whether it’s getting through years of nursing and anesthesia school with all A’s, recovering from 3 knee surgeries, or rebuilding my life after a divorce, I just deal with it. I have developed some thick skin and can handle most things thrown at me. There is a certain power in knowing that.
What’s your favourite viral social media challenge?
Definitely the Harlem Shake…can someone bring that back please?
What is a goal you’ve set yourself recently?
To look great in a bikini at age 50. No seriously, I have better goals. To be fluent in Spanish by the end of 2020. I am conversational after living in Miami but not fluent. Thinking of doing immersion in Colombia next year to take it to the next level.
What is the main focus of your social media?
At first it was to promote and support my blog but now I have made real connections and formed a little community that I enjoy interacting with. I also just like to have fun with it.
Who or what inspires you the most?
People who are doing real good in the world. The nurses and doctors who work for Doctors Without Borders, for example and other similar organizations. People who spend their time rescuing animals, all the environmental warriors trying to make our planet cleaner and healthier. People like this make me want to do more and to be better.
Who is spreading a positive message on social media at the moment?
Phoebe at Kaptain Kenny is one of my favorite people on social media (who I got to meet once during a layover in her home city). She brings up important topics and she isn’t a wallflower spreading false inspirational messages through quotes she just googled. She is real and honest. She manages to cover difficult topics in a tactful way, something I’m not so great at.
What’s the best advice you’ve gotten recently?
I met a 70 something woman who I bonded with on a wine tour in Mendoza. She has been everywhere. She told me to keep traveling as much as I can and also not to eat a big meal the first night on my Antarctica ship. (That night is the dreaded Drake Passage, where most people throw up from rough seas).
What’s one insecurity you have about yourself?
Being older. I am in my 40’s and I’m sort of one of the only people solo traveling around the world in this age group. When I stay in hostels I’m always so much older than everyone else. I still love to have fun and can hang with the twenty-somethings (up to a point because my hangovers are much worse than theirs) but I’m always wondering if they are thinking…who’s the old lady? LOL.
What do you hope to achieve with your social media?
To show people who don’t travel to certain places something new and different. To demonstrate that travel isn’t just for millennials and senior citizens. To inspire other women who are nervous to travel on their own that they CAN! And also to build an international community of interesting people.
Have you ever met anyone through your social media?
Yes many people now. I have several “real life” friends I met on Instagram and Facebook in various places in the world. For some of them, we had been on-line acquaintances or in the same blogging group and happened to be in the same country at the same time. Since then I have actually taken trips to visit them. It’s a strange and awesome phenomenon.
Where’s your next travel destination?
The Baltic countries, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.
What is one of your travel accomplishments you’ve achieved recently?
I visited Antarctica which has been a dream for almost 8 years. It’s something I wasn’t sure I’d ever accomplish and it exceeded all my expectations and changed me forever.
What is one travel goal you are working towards?
I want to see every animal I can, in its natural habitat, in an ethical way. I have seen many on my list, the big five in Africa, gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, penguins in Antarctica, and even a Komodo Dragon. Still on my list are polar bears, tigers, and sloths.
What is your top travel hack?
Collecting points and miles. I am a shameless credit card whore and open and close cards all the time to get bonus miles. I have flown first class with points on long flights on swanky airlines and paid next to nothing with this system.
What is one thing you take with you on all of your travels?
My Kindle. I love to read and that thing is my baby.
How do you self-care?
Wine mostly. LOL. Alone time is what I need when things get to be crazy. I need to have a quiet space, maybe some hot tea and a good book or Netflix and I will feel recharged after that.
