Today we meet Erika who you can find on Instagram and her websiteerikahobart-2

Let’s start with the basics, who are you? Where are you from?

Hello! My name is Erika Hobart. I’m a Japanese-American photographer and writer based in London.

Is your social media your day job/side income or hobby? If a hobby, what do you for work?

I’m a photographer and writer. And in this day and age, social media plays an important role in marketing myself and my work.

What is your favourite thing about yourself?

When I am determined to do something, I do it.

What is the main focus of your content?

Cities, nature, and nostalgia tend to be reoccurring themes in my work. I try to use my personal experiences and background in journalism to tell meaningful stories about travel.

What influenced you to start your page?

I started @erikaexplores as an outlet for documenting my travels. It began as a passion project and a visual diary of sorts.

Who or what inspires you the most?

My obaachan (grandmother) and my ojiichan (grandfather). Anthony Bourdain. Vintage travel photos.

What camera do you use?

I currently own a Sony a7iii. But I also play around with Leica and Nikon cameras. I love experimenting with different cameras and comparing the different look and feel that each one achieves.

What software do you use to edit your photos?

I use Lightroom and very occasionally Photoshop. I also like VSCO and Afterlight.

What’s your advice for the solo traveller who still wants great shots of themselves on the road?

Invest in a good tripod and don’t be afraid to look silly. Anyone who takes great photos has had to do something that made them look silly at one point. Embrace it!

Where is your next travel destination?

I have some trips planned within the United Kingdom in the coming months. I am also heading to Marrakech in the fall. I actually just got back from Morocco, but was so inspired by my time there that I knew I had to get back as soon as possible. The colors. The textures. The way the light and shadows play together. It is an artist’s dream.

Are you trying to spread a message with your social media? If so, what is it?

Be adventurous. Be curious. Be kind.  For better or for worse, social media has changed the way that people travel and I want to be a part of that in the most positive way possible.

What destination is still on the top of your bucket list?

The list is endless, I want to go absolutely everywhere. But right now, I am really longing to visit India, Kenya, and Australia.

What is one piece of advice you have for someone who wants to travel but is overwhelmed by the process of planning and choosing the right trip?

Book a flight! Right now! So many people say they want to travel and put it off for a few months. And those few months turns into a few years. It’s a lot harder to back out of an adventure if you have a plane ticket. It will shift your mindset to “I am going,” rather than “I would like to go.” That forces you to sit down and plan the other logistics of your trip.

What is your top travel hack?

Start exploring at sunrise. It’s absolutely magical to have a place all to yourself.

What is one thing you take with you on all of your travels?

I have two! Cold medicine and moisturizer.

What has been your favourite destination so far? Why?

I love so many places for so many very different reasons. But Croatia has a special place in my heart. I spent a month there by myself when I was going through a difficult time in my life. There is so much beauty to bask in that I ended up spending every waking moment outside. I felt so happy and healthy by the end of my trip. I like to think that the Adriatic Sea healed me and I am forever grateful for it.

Travelling solo or with friends?

I enjoy both. It depends on the situation.

Group tours or your own itinerary?

I lean more toward doing my own thing. Most people don’t want to start as early in the morning as me!
